The Instructor at the Front of the Room Can Change Everything

Think back to your favourite class.

What made it great? The workout? The music? The atmosphere?

In most cases — it was the instructor.

Great Group Fitness Instructors don't just deliver sessions. They create energy. They build confidence. They motivate people to keep going when they feel like stopping. They build communities where people feel welcome, supported and inspired.

That is a powerful responsibility — and an incredible opportunity.

Group Fitness is also one of the most accessible entry points into a career in health and fitness. Some instructors teach a few classes a week alongside their main career. Others go on to build full timetables, specialise in specific formats or progress into Personal Training, Pilates or Studio Cycling.

One qualification can be the first step towards something much bigger.

WHAT A CAREER IN GORUP FITNESS CAN BE

Create Real Impact

Every class is an opportunity to help people improve their fitness, reduce stress, build confidence and feel part of something. Few careers offer that kind of daily reward.

Flexible Opportunities

Teach classes alongside your existing job, build a full timetable or use Group Fitness as a stepping stone into a broader fitness career — it works around your life.

A Growing Industry

Gyms, health clubs, leisure facilities and boutique studios continue to invest heavily in group exercise. Demand for enthusiastic, knowledgeable instructors has never been higher.

This pathway could be right for you if...

You've ever walked out of a class thinking "I'd love to do that"

You're passionate about group exercise, HIIT, circuits, dance fitness or functional training

You want to turn your love of fitness into a flexible side career or full-time profession

You're already working in fitness and want to add group coaching to your skillset

You're looking for your first step into the health and fitness industry

You enjoy motivating and energising others

There is no typical Group Fitness Instructor. Some are 20, some are 50. Some have years of industry experience, others are taking their very first step. The most important quality isn't experience — it's the desire to lead, inspire and help others enjoy movement.

Group Fitness Is In Our DNA

The founders of Motion Fitness Education come from a strong Group Fitness background — and a genuine passion for raising standards across the sector.

That passion shapes everything about how we deliver our Group Fitness programmes. From the quality of our tutors to the depth of our course content, we care deeply about developing instructors who are truly ready to lead from the front.

As an EMD UK Education Partner, our Group Fitness qualifications are delivered to the highest recognised standards within the group exercise industry — giving you the confidence that your qualification is backed by the sector's National Governing Body.

So Where Can Group Fitness Take You?

Group Fitness is often the starting point — but it's rarely the finishing line.

Many Group Fitness Instructors go on to add Studio Cycling, Pilates, Yoga or specialist programmes to their timetable. Others use their Group Fitness qualification as a foundation for progressing into Personal Training or advanced coaching roles.

Whatever your ambitions, MFE has a clear pathway to help you get there.

GOT QUESTIONS? WE'VE GOT ANSWERS

Here are the things people most commonly ask before starting the Group Fitness Pathway pathway.

Q: Do I need previous fitness industry experience?

No. The Level 2 Group Training qualification is designed as an entry-level course and is suitable for complete beginners. If you have a passion for group exercise and a desire to lead others, you have everything you need to get started.

Q: What's the difference between the online and blended options for Group Training?

The online option lets you complete the full qualification through flexible online learning — perfect if you want to study entirely at your own pace around work and family commitments.

The blended option combines online learning with practical workshop days, giving you hands-on coaching experience alongside the theory. If you're new to coaching, blended learning can be a great way to build confidence.

Q: Are the qualifications regulated and industry recognised?

Our Level 2 Group Training and Level 2 Studio Cycling qualifications are regulated by OFQUAL and awarded by Focus Awards.

The EMD UK Bridge is awarded by Active IQ and is not currently OFQUAL regulated, however it does count towards your ongoing CPD and grants eligibility for EMD UK membership.

As a CIMSPA Enhancing Status Training Provider, all of our programmes are delivered to the highest professional standards within the health and fitness industry.

Q: Can I teach straight after qualifying?

Yes — many graduates begin teaching classes in gyms, studios, leisure facilities or community settings shortly after completing their qualification. Whether you're looking for employed roles or self-employed opportunities, your Level 2 qualification is your professional starting point.

Q: Is the EMD UK Bridge right for me if I'm already teaching classes?

If you're currently delivering pre-choreographed programmes — such as Zumba, Les Mills or similar — but don't yet hold a recognised fitness qualification, the EMD UK Bridge is designed specifically for you. It gives you the underpinning knowledge and professional recognition to complement the classes you're already teaching.

Please note that whilst the EMD UK Bridge grants eligibility for EMD UK membership, some gym operators and health clubs may still require a minimum of a Level 2 qualification before allowing you to teach on their premises.

If you're unsure which route is right for you, speak to our team and we'll help you make the right decision.

Q: I already hold a Level 2 Gym Instructor or Level 3 Personal Training qualification — what are my options?

Great news — you may not need to complete the full Group Training qualification from scratch. Depending on your existing qualification, you may be able to enrol directly onto the Level 2 Studio Cycling course or complete add-on units for Group Training.

The best route will depend on your specific qualification and goals, so we'd recommend speaking to our team who can advise on the most appropriate and cost-effective option for you.

Q: What's the difference between Level 2 Group Training and the Level 2 Exercise to Music qualification?

Level 2 Group Training is the evolved version of the Exercise to Music (ETM) qualification. Many awarding organisations have phased out the ETM qualification and replaced it with Group Training, as it covers a much broader range of group exercise formats — giving instructors greater flexibility and more opportunities within the industry.

Q: How long does it take to become a Group Fitness Instructor?

The Level 2 Group Training qualification typically takes between 8 and 12 weeks to complete, depending on how much time you're able to dedicate to your studies. The fully online option gives you complete flexibility to work at your own pace.

The Level 2 Studio Cycling course is completed in a single day due to its more focused practical workshop day.

Q: Where are Group Fitness Instructor courses available?

Our fully online Group Training qualification is available to learners across the UK — wherever you are based. Blended learning options and Studio Cycling practical workshop days are held at locations across the UK. View our upcoming course dates and locations to find the nearest available intake.

Q: Is there an age limit?

You must be 16 or over to enrol — but there is no upper age limit. Our learners come from all walks of life and all stages of life. If you have the passion and commitment, age is never a barrier here.

Q: Is funding available?

Flexible monthly payment plans are available on the Group Training qualification. Speak to our team for full details on payment options available to you.

If you have any further questions please speak to our careers team who will be ableto answer and specific questions.
